ghostgirl‘ is a statement of something new, and a gesture of respect to something old. For many years, I was a ghost: I was always a girl, but she wasn’t allowed to exist, except in the peripheral of people’s visions, in the edges of peoples’ words, in the corners of conversations. I recorded many songs before coming out, but they were performances – not musical performances, but personality performances – I desperately wanted to be seen as something I wasn’t, because being seen as something you are is terrifying. So the songs of ghostgirl are prayers to a life defined by potential, hymns to comfort the girl who slept in the deepest part of my heart for many years, but for too long was never allowed to wake up. She’s awake now.
